The total area of the Bali province is 5,634,40 ha and has administratively been divided into eight regencies and one city which are, Jembrana, Tabanan, Badung, Gianyar, Karangasem, Klungkung, Bangli and Buleleng Regencies and the city of Denpasar which is also the capital city of the province.

BIRU programme started to be implemented in Bali since August 2010. The first construction partner organisation that the programme work with is BOA (Bali Organic Association) Foundation. To date, there are four other construction partners organizations that become partners of IDEP Selaras Alam Foundation, Kauci Manikaya Foundation, Sunari Foundation and Koperasi Mitra Usaha Mandiri /CV. MUM.

BIRU programme was introduced through the six demonstration plots, which is in Desa Buahan, Kec. Payangan, Kab. Gianyar; Desa Jehem, Kec. Tembuku; Desa Sulahan, Kec. Susut, Kab. Bangli; Desa Patas, Kec. Gerokgak, Kab. Buleleng; Desa Les, Kec. Tejakula, Kab. Buleleng; Desa Angkah, Kec. Selemadeg Barat, Kab. Tabanan; and Desa Selat, Kec. Klungkung, Kab.Klungkung.

By the end of July 2011, the program has trained 57 masons and 12 supervisors. Most of the standardized BIRU appliances have been manufactured locally which include mixer, the main gas valve, and manometer.

To date, there are 110 households using the BIRU bio-digesters. They spread in the district of Buleleng, Jembrana, Tabanan, Badung, Bangli, Gianyar, Klungkung. The biggest external challenge in the implementation of the BIRU programme in Bali is no credit access for the potential biogas user. Until now, there is not yet one financial institutions that provide credit facilities to farmers. This caused many farmers to require longer time to prepare the construction fund despite the IDR 2 million subsidy provided by Hivos.
