Village Unit Cooperative (KUD) Jabung was established on 28 February 1980 in Malang (East Java), and started developing their dairy cattle business in 1989 after forays into credits and trade. 8 years later, KUD Jabung was named the Best National KUD. In 1998, KUD Jabung changed its name to Agribusiness Cooperative (Koperasi Agro Niaga/KAN) Jabung. Their mission is to improve quality of life through continuous development of human resources by being proactive in providing quality service and products for enhanced yields in productivity, to marketing for members’ maximum business growth, embedded in strong environmental, cultural and social values. Their persistence in dairy cattle business paid off in 2007 - once again, KAN Jabung received the National Cooperative Performance Achievement Award, having previously earned themselves the Best Overall Performance Direct Supplier Award in 2005 by Nestle (primary milk buyer of KAN Jabung) for excellence in performance and quality of milk.
The cooperative was deemed as an experienced institution in biogas development - according to a feasibility study conducted by the Dutch government, 50 biogas units installed in 4 years, funded wholly by farmers. Total of dairy cattle owned by KAN Jabung’s 1600 members are 5,559 or equivalent to approximately 5% of the largest dairy cattle population in East Java. Due to these factors KAN Jabung was entrusted to be one of BIRU’s pioneer partners in cooperation with Hivos Foundation and the Dutch government. So far, 61 biogas units have been installed for 172 families to enjoy.
The simple soft loan credit system for a 4 m3 biogas unit as facilitated by Nestle - loan repayments are directly subtracted from daily fresh milk accumulation - help provide credits to members with attractive rates. With excellent customer service and supported by high quality BIRU-standard biogas units, KAN Jabung looks optimistic set to achieving its goals and become a model Cooperative in energy saving, environmental cleanliness and economic improvement to turn East Java into a reputable Biogas Center for Indonesia.
