KUD Sumber Makmur
The Sumber Makmur Village Unit Cooperative of Ngantang was founded as a BUUD (Village Unit Business Enterprise) in 1972 to function as food stock enterprise. The unit was later transformed into a cooperative on July 18th 1980 along with the ever changing dynamics of the state of economy. Concurrently, there are 10,270 members, many of whom are members of the dairy division (7,578 members) while the rest are spread in several divisions, including 1,651 members in community development and 858 members of credit union. Through hard work, the management of the cooperative has now extended its services and operates nine business units: dairy, cattle development, cattle feed, transportation, trade and services, credit union, technical services, cigarettes, and a clinic. The achievements the cooperative has earned during its 27 years of establishment are as follows:
- Best KUD of East Java Province in 1980
- Independent KUD in 1989
- Best National KUD in 1990
- National Independent KUD from Year 1 to Year 5 in 1991 – 1995
- Prime National Exemplary KUD Mandiri Year 2 in 1997
- Performing Cooperative in 2000 and
- Cooperative with a special award in 2007
On April 1st 2010 Hivos signed an agreement with KUD Sumber Makmur to implement the domestic biogas program, with a target of 300 units for the first year. 300 farmers decided to register for the first year of the program through word of mouth promotion. Hivos provides Rp 2 million subsidy per unit which allow farmers to pay Rp 3.130.000 on a 12 month credit system supported by Nestle. Thus the Sumber Makmur Cooperative is hopeful in reaching its ambitions to create independent, educated members and learn about self-made energy as a source of renewable environmentally friendly energy implemented in their daily lives. This will not only improve financial aspects of their lives, but also participate in alternative sustainable energy resource for generations to come.
