Mr. Daeng Rewa is a civil servant living in Takalar District, South Sulawesi Province. He also raises cattle in his backyard since last year (cattle fattening business). His business has been operating for two years and so far it has produces four cattle.

He also operates a 4-cubic meter Domestic Biogas (BIRU) installation which is fed with cow manures produced by his cattle as the raw materials. This biogas installation was constructed by one of BIRU’s construction partner, CV Pratama Butiti Jaya under the management of Mrs. Rosa Lantara.

Mr. Daeng Rewa wishes to counter the perception of other people that raising cattle within a residential downtown area will create numerous issues. These issues are primarily are odor emitted by the cow shed, waste product discharge, fodder, and so forth which urban people normally think of among this modern life.

Through the support of his wife who is also a civil serval, he proved that such perceptions are incorrect through the tangible proof by his family action. Within a 5 month period, he is able to add 30 kg body weight to his cattle, while the cow manures are fed to the biogas reactors as the raw materials which are later converted into biogas he uses as fuel for cooking purposes.

Biogas sludge or bio-slurry discharged by biogas reactor on daily basis is used as organic fertilizer for his crop in the backyard. Additionally, bio-slurry is the main ingredient fed to his worm culture. Conversion of cow manures into biogas has allowed the odor to dissipate or completely eliminated.

From his observation, feeding the bio-slurry to his worms has led to a more accelerated growth and bigger worm size. Presently his cultured worms are distributed to a company which has established collaboration with him with a sale price of Rp 25,000 for each kilogram (Mr. Daeng Raw is the smallholder of the company).

The backyard area of Mr. Daeng Rawa’s resident within the urban residential area has been designed so nicely, that allow any visitor to feel comfortable. Cow shades, biogas installation, vermiculture facility, surrounded by productive crops such as mango, langsat, tangerine, vegetables, and elephant grass are visible on the area. Indeed it is an unusual landscape in the middle of urban area and unusual habits of traditional urban community. Above all, it is the real and outstanding results demonstrated by Mr. Daeng Rawa. Everything started with his decision to utilize Domestic Biogas to improve the quality of life. (Sitti Fharidha Razak)
