Bogor (Antara Megapolitan) – Implementation of Domestic Biogas (BIRU) Programme in Indonesia has experienced growth since it was first initiated on May 2009 up to August 2017 in which 20,000 of them are in service today.
“As of August 2017 there are 20,000 biogas reactors constructed and operated by approximately 10,474 owners in Indonesia,” the Executive Director of Yayasan Rumah Energi, Lina Moeis, stated in Bogor, West Java, on Monday.
She said 20,000 units of biogas reactors have been completely built which are scattered throughout 10 provinces in Indonesia (124 districts, 807 sub districts).
East Java is the provice with the highest population of BIRU reactor which is at 7,293 units. West Nusa Tenggara is on a second place with 3,505 units followed successively by Central Java at 2,184 units; West Java and Banten at 1,412 units; South Sulawesi at 1,390 units; Bali at 978 units, Lampung with 363 units, and East Nusa Tenggara with 272 units.
“The benefits of biogas include the gas produced for cooking and lighting purposes, while the bio-slurry with its abundant benefits especially as organic fertilisers,” she said.
Lina described, that the fulfillment of energy requirement for the people in Indonesia is the real issue, in which 93 percent of the people remain dependent on fossil fuel, only 7 percent of them depend on renewable energy.
By 2025, the target of renewable energy fulfillment will be at 23 percents, in which to achieve such objectives, it takes the right strategy and consistent policies.
“Civil society may support the government by becoming the pioneer in promoting the renewable energy,” she said.
She further explained, Biogas is one of the renewable energy which is easy to learn with abundant benefits that match the lifestyle of Indonesian community which are predominantly agrarian.
According to her, sustainable integrated farming based on the biogas will greatly support the cattle farmers and farmers to accelerate their agriculture productivitis.
“Approximately 73 percent of the total users of BIRU have actively utilised the biogas sludge as the fertilisers for their farmig grounds, mixture of compost, and for sale purposes,” she explained.
She further described, that the BIRU users enjoy the multiple benefits of the biogas availability and which are further expected to become stimulants for biogas sector development in accordance with Rumah Energi mission.
BIRU Programme is the initiative of Hivos and SNV (Netherland Development Organisation) implemented by both Hivos and Rumah Energi, in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.
Additionally, this programme receives supports from the Government of Netherland, the Embassy of Norway, Energising Development (EnDev) programme, and MCAI (Millenium Challenge Account Indonesia) as well as local partners in Indonesia.
“BIRU Programme is the true manifestation of renewable energy development through sustainable approach. The purpose is to create a market-based sector which serves the potential biogas users a total number of approximately more than 2 million household of cattle farmers in Indonesia,” Lina concluded.
