Even without electricity, a laptop would do!

It was Sunday morning, 5th February 2011. A clustered group of men were seen in the middle of the plantation area: some formed a semi-circle and sat themselves in front of a laptop, while the rest squatted behind them. It turns out they’re watching an animation about how animal dung is processed into a form of gas for domestic uses as filmed by BIRU – domestic biogas; a joint international collaboration program between Indonesia and the Netherlands as implemented by Hivos through their partnership with local institutions.

Program BIRU: Solusi Sumber Energi Murah sekaligus Memperbaiki Kualitas Lingkungan

”Even regular dung can be used for cooking, let alone processed biogas fire”

There was something different about BIRU’s socialization at Ngrambitan, Blora last 9th of February. Socialization was quite festive and intimate as it was interspersed and humored with jokes by ketoprak performers. “In our village, ketoprak culture is still maintained, even our community leaders are used to playing their roles,” said Mr. Sukar who was the Head of the Ngrambitan Village.

SUMBA: Iconic Island for renewable energy

Initiated in 2010, the Iconic Island project has Hivos’ commitment to share its experiences, ideas and ambitions, contribute to funds and coordinate a collaborative effort of beneficiaries and invites others to join. Participation and agreement on the objectives of all important stakeholders, and especially the government of Indonesia, is essential. The purpose of the Iconic Island program is to demonstrate a replicable model that addresses both climate change and poverty alleviation. With the program’s succession, Hivos hopes to tackle these issues by transitioning to a more reliable and renewable form of energy source on a large scale at a rate fast enough to reduce its negative effects and offer solutions to resources of renewable energy which can be applied at any other islands all around the world.
