The Final Report of the Indonesia Domestic Biogas Programme (IDBP) is already published and available to be downloaded. The programme that was initiated by the Royal Netherlands Embassy and implemented by Hivos and Yayasan Rumah Energi with assistance from SNV, was started on 15 May 2009 and ran under a contribution agreement with the Embassy until 31 December 2013 and with endorsement from the Indonesian Directorate Bio-Energy, Directorate General New Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Indonesia.

Salah satunya adalah Ibu Luh Ketut Eniati, 36 tahun. Ibu ini bertempat tinggal di Banjar Rendang Tengah, masih dalam wilayah Kecamatan Rendang. Bermula dari usulan suaminya, Bapak Wayan Partha (42 tahun) yang cukup ngotot untuk memiliki reaktor biogas untuk keluarga ini, akhirnya Ibu Eniati malah memanfaatkan biogas tersebut untuk membuat usaha kecil keluarga.

Amaq Djadun made the decision to use biogas without a slight doubt. The decision was made after he saw a biogas reactor at one villager’s house in Teniga Village, Tanjung Subdistrict, North Lombok, which had been functioning perfectly. Amaq Djadun believes that biogas is the safest fuel for cooking. Moreover, cow droppings as the raw material for biogas are available in abundance in the area. He is a farmer and a cattle raiser. The people in his neighborhood in Pendua Village, Kayangan Subdistrict, North Lombok mainly work on the fields and raise cattle.

One night in September 2011, Darto’s house in Pendem, Mojogedang, Karanganyar, was full of people. Several people walked around while others were seen cramming his brightly lit living room. They were curious about Darto’s biogas lamp. In an animated fashion, Darto related the story of his new biogas lamp. “All you need to do is strike a little fire near the lamp’s sheath, and it will immediately light up,” he said with delight. “It is also easy to use. I can even control its brightness level,” Darto added.

The participants of the training were supervisors from seven BIRU Construction partners in Central Java and Yogyakarta, among others, Paluma, SPTN HPS, LPTP, KUD Mojosongo, CV QT, Postra, CV. Graha Utama. It is expected that after this training, supervisors can conduct training on operation and maintenance for users who have utilize the BIRU reactor.

It has been eleven years since Fatchiyah and her husband, Yusuf, 35, started a business as milk cow farmers. Started with two cows, they saved money and now have four cows in their stable. The family lives in Nongkojajar, Pasuruan district around 60 km south of Surabaya, Indonesian second-largest city and provincial capital of East Java. In this area, dairy farming was first attempted by Dutch colonials in 1911 to satisfy a demand for fresh milk. As commonly faced by milk cow farmers in in Tlogosari village where they live, the couple also struggle with the high need of cooking fuel. “We spend almost 1/3 of our monthly income to buy fuel,” says the 32-year-old woman.

It was Sunday morning, 5th February 2011. A clustered group of men were seen in the middle of the plantation area: some formed a semi-circle and sat themselves in front of a laptop, while the rest squatted behind them. It turns out they’re watching an animation about how animal dung is processed into a form of gas for domestic uses as filmed by BIRU – domestic biogas; a joint international collaboration program between Indonesia and the Netherlands as implemented by Hivos through their partnership with local institutions.

On 20th and 21st of Last January, the East Java office of the BIRU Program held a Training of Trainers (ToT) attended by 19 biogas supervisors from 10 of BIRU’s development partners. This activity was held for two days at the Hotel Metropole in Batu Town, Malang and was directly guided by Sundar Bajgain, senior technical advisor of BIRU Program. In the training, participants gained general biogas knowledge and was explained the benefits and rights of users regarding three-year warranties and subsidies accepted. Participants also received training of technical operations and biogas reactor maintenance, various problems which often came across, how to overcome them as well as utilization of bio-slurry.

Dutch govt helps build biogas plants in Lombok

Indonesia, in cooperation with the Dutch government, is working to develop alternative energy from livestock waste for local farmers’ household needs on Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).

The Dutch government is represented by HIVOS (Humanist Institute for Development Cooperation) Regional Office of Southeast Asia (ROSEA).
